I am interested in the abstract ‘formal qualities’, meaning those of colour, shape, texture, and others. I start with a proposal, an idea, the origins of which may lie in nature, sign and symbol, or that very abstract of all the arts, music. The images that I manipulate often derive from the graphic forms of ancient cultures.
Having initiated a set of ideas, (will that colour work with that shape in that composition), there arises, from the work itself, a set of internal rules. The work begins to have its own logic. Consequentially, there begins the long process of experiment and alteration.
The search is to find a tension and balance, an equilibrium of the elements, recognisable through the heart, mind and gut.
